#CeasefireNow

The South Asian Legal Clinic of British Columbia (SALCBC) is committed to improving access to justice for South Asian people in British Columbia, including those who face barriers in accessing legal services and navigating the justice system.

As an organization committed to justice, SALCBC supports human rights and freedoms for all. This includes everyone’s rights under the BC Human Rights Code to be free from discrimination based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, political belief, or religion.

We also support the constitutionally protected right to freedom of expression under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, including expressions of support for the human rights and freedom of occupied Palestinian Territories.

We are alarmed by the disturbing racist rhetoric in reporting and commentary regarding Israel and Palestine, which is similar to racist rhetoric post-9/11.  We are concerned about the resulting rise in racism, anti-Palestinian racism, Islamophobic incidents and hate crimes that impact members of South Asian communities, including South Asian Muslims. We are also concerned about the disturbing rise in anti-Semitic incidents impacting Jewish communities.

No one should face discrimination due to their race or religion, or their lawful exercise of their freedom of expression.

As supporters of human rights, we call on our elected officials to support call for an immediate end to violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, as called for by the United Nations and numerous human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International.

SALCBC has signed on with Ceasefire Now
